Drama Cristiano Ronaldo insists on leaving Manchester United, suspected Lionel Messi factor behind it

Manchester United – Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo sparked a furore after reportedly asking Manchester United (MU) to let him go this summer. According to former striker who has played in the Premier League, Tony Cascarino, there is a Lionel Messi factor behind the Ronaldo saga.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to leave Manchester United is very surprising. The reason is that he has only returned to Old Trafford from Juventus for a year, to be precise in the summer of 2022.

In 39 games for Manchester United in all competitions last season, Ronaldo scored 24 goals. The Portuguese player was the Red Devils’ top scorer last season.

However, United had a very bad season. They failed to win any titles and only finished sixth in the Premier League.

Although new United manager Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo is still in his plans, the player has different intentions. Ronaldo reportedly wants to move because United do not play in the Champions League,

Tony Cascarino has his own theory regarding Ronaldo’s desire to leave Manchester United. He believes Ronaldo wants to move to maintain his record in Europe, especially the Champions League.

He worries that Lionel Messi could threaten his record if he stays at United. Messi next season can play in the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain.

“Ronaldo as a player, always has, has an ego. There are a lot of things about him, but the team he plays for has been successful, so you always do it as a team player,” said Cascarino, as quoted by Talksport, Monday (4/6/2022).

“It’s great, he scores goals, he gets awards. He’s one of the greatest in world football. You can have all that and that’s great, as long as you win. When you don’t win, now you have a problem,” he added.

Ronaldo scored 141 goals in the Champions League, making him the all-time top scorer in the tournament. His position is not necessarily safe.

Messi is only 16 goals adrift of Ronaldo in that category. The goal gap between the two players will be trimmed if Ronaldo doesn’t play in the Champions League next season. According to Cascarino, Ronaldo wants to keep this prestigious record.

“I have told you directly. I am a little suspicious of his motives because he has 141 goals in the Champions League, while Messi has 125 goals. He wants to be reluctant not to play in the Champions League because he wants to be the greatest in Champions League history,” said Cascarino.

“Yes, that’s Ronaldo,” he added.

Many clubs are monitoring Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer saga. Manchester United will try to persuade him to stay at Old Trafford.

On the other hand, European giants have shown an interest in signing the former Real Madrid and Juventus player.

Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Napoli are reportedly interested in asking for his hand. All three clubs will play in the Champions League next season.

So, how did Ronaldo end up?
