Manchester United (MU) has reportedly informed Barcelona that they want to complete the transfer of Frenkie de Jong on Friday (15/7/2022).
United chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtough are seen in Barcelona on Monday (11/7/2022). They are understood to have held talks with Barcelona over a deal for the 25-year-old midfielder.
United are currently in dire need of a midfielder following the departures of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata. Erik ten Hag is looking to improve his midfield options this summer and has identified De Jong as a top target.
Manchester United offered 65 million euros plus an addition to Barcelona for De Jong. Why are negotiations taking so long?
However, his transfer to Old Trafford was protracted as Barcelona owed the player more than £13.7 million in wages suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to talkSPORT, United really want the transfer to be completed quickly. They have informed Barca that the deal should be finalized this Friday.
The report adds that the Red Devils have compiled a list of midfield alternatives in case they fail to catch up to De Jong.
MU reportedly has an alternative, namely Ruben Neves from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.
Neves is believed to be valued at around £50m by Wolves. Tielemans, who has also been linked with Arsenal, could cost between £30m and £35m as he has only 12 months left on his contract.
Manchester United have been negotiating with Barcelona for more than a month regarding the transfer of De Jong. However, until now the transfer is still not finished.
As reported by the Mirror, the situation is starting to make Manchester United restless. The Red Devils team is restless if the transfer of Frenkie de Jong will fail.
Moreover, MU is also under pressure to immediately buy players. So far, they have only inaugurated Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.
Another factor complicating negotiations for De Jong is the issue of adds on.
Manchester United and Barcelona have actually agreed on the amount of Frenkie de Jong’s transfer. They agreed to an offer of 65 million euros in down payment, plus 20 million euros added on.
The negotiation process for the clause activating adds on is going very hard. MU considers Barcelona’s adds on clause to be unreasonable, so the process is going to be tough.
